Named after a term of endearment for a talented young surfer, the playful Honda Grom 125 was an immediate hit when it debuted for 2014. Dealers couldn’t keep them in stock, buyers flipped them for profit and aftermarket suppliers jumped in with both feet to offer hop-up parts, everything from carbon-fiber exhaust pipes to high-end suspension—all for a bike that retailed for $2,999.

Three years later, feeling the heat of competition from the new-for-2017 Kawasaki Z125 Pro and Kymco K-Pipe 125, Honda has given the Grom what it calls a “bold restyle.” The bodywork has sharper edges and a more aggressive, less cuddly look, with an integrated fuel tank and side panels and a stacked LED headlight layout. Other changes include a sportier handlebar, a low-slung exhaust, an upswept tail section with a higher passenger seat and a new flip-key.
The bones of the Grom are the same—air-cooled, fuel-injected 125cc single with chain final drive, steel frame, 31mm upside-down fork with 3.9 inches of travel, single shock with 4.1 inches of travel (no suspension adjustment at either end) and single disc brakes front and rear. The stubby 47.2-inch wheelbase, 30-inch seat height and 1.45-gallon fuel capacity are the same, but claimed wet weight is up 4 pounds to 229.
The 2017 Honda Grom will be available in Matte Gray Metallic, Pearl Red, Pearl White or Bright Yellow (shown) for $3,199, and it should be in Honda dealerships in August.
