In need of a catch-all bag for a ride-and-camp to eastern Oregon last summer, I picked out the Dry Duffel from Wolfman’s Expedition Dry Line collection. I was impressed by the heft of the bag just lifting it out of the box. Turns our that Wolfman doesn’t mess around with flimsy fabrics for these bags – the small Dry Duffel I chose features 22-ounce vinyl fabric for the body and super-stout 34-ounce for the sides. And they weld, rather than sew, the Dry-Line bags to assure strong, waterproof seams.
The small Dry Duffel measures 20 inches wide, sells for $104.99 and holds over 33 liters of your favorite gear. It weighs 2 pounds, 11 ounces on my aging postal scale. Ten dollars more gets you the 40-liter, 22-inch medium size, and another ten buys the large one (28 inches and over 47 liters). All the bags are a nominal 11.5 inches tall and close with a classic roll-top design. Need a little more space? Roll the top down a time or two less. That expand-o feature makes it tempting to over pack, but comes in handy for hauling a few groceries to camp at the end of the day.
Packing a Dry Duffel is simple – drop in your gear, squeeze out the air and roll down the top. Four compression straps cinch things down to a tidy waterproof bundle. One pair secures the roll top and a second pair crosses the top of the bag. There’s also separate a set of straps for mounting the bag to your bike, and a comfortable handle and removable shoulder strap to make the bag easy to carry while off the bike.
We expected Oregon’s desert side to be dry in late summer, but Mother Nature started us off with four days of wet weather, from drizzle to downpours. Not the best conditions for riding, but perfect for testing the Dry Duffel. Each evening it was the same story when I opened the bag – not a drop of water to be found. And when the weather dried out and the back roads turned dusty, not a speck of dust had found its way inside. Rugged, easy to live with and completely waterproof – what’s not to like?
The Wolfman Expedition Dry Duffel is made in the U.S.A. and comes in all black or yellow with black sides. You can find the complete Expedition Dry Line collection at www.wolfmanluggage.com.
