Calling its new FZ-09 “version 2.0,” Yamaha gave the affordable, sporty naked bike more aggressive bodywork with dual LED headlights similar to the FZ-10, new radiator shrouds, front scoop and rear side covers, a new taillight, a shorter tail section, a swingarm-mounted fender and license plate holder. For more comfort, the rider’s seat has a flatter shape and the passenger seating area is longer. Other new features include adjustable traction control, an assist-and-slipper clutch, a fully adjustable fork and standard ABS.
Returning unchanged is the FZ-09’s feisty, liquid-cooled, 847cc Crossplane Crankshaft Concept in-line triple, which makes more than 100 horsepower at the rear wheel and loads of low-end torque. It has throttle-by-wire with multiple engine response modes, a 6-speed transmission paired with a new assist-and-slipper clutch, a mass-centralized 3-into-1 exhaust and chain final drive. The new traction control system has two modes or it can be turned off.

Up front, a new 41mm upside-down fork is now fully adjustable and offers 5.4 inches of travel. The lay-down rear shock is adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping and offers 5.1 inches. Front radial-mount 4-piston calipers squeeze 298mm discs, a 1-piston rear caliper squeezes a 245mm disc and ABS is now standard.
With its 3.7-gallon tank full and ready to ride, Yamaha says the new FZ-09 weighs 425 pounds, which is a few pounds heavier than the previous model without ABS and other changes.
The 2017 Yamaha FZ-09 will be available in February in Candy Red, Matte Silver or Electric White for $8,999.
