Janus Motorcycles, the Indiana-based manufacturer known for its vintage-styled hand-built bikes, has announced the return of its Origin lineup. This line of four motorcycles provides an accessible launching point into Janus ownership, with prices starting at just $6,295.
Janus operates a little differently than your ordinary run-of-the-mill manufacturer. Instead of focusing on large productions and pumping out new models, Janus is focused on the artistry of motorcycle design, building small motorcycles by hand for a small customer base. Because it puts so much time and resources into the details of its motorcycles, they tend to be more expensive than bikes of similar spec from larger manufacturers. The Origin line strips back some of those time-consuming details to offer customers a lower entry price.
In addition to the blank-slate models, part of the Origin strategy is to offer all the accessories and upgrades needed to transform them into fully equipped Janus motorcycles like their non-Origin counterparts. This means that owners can add these parts over time and choose the parts that will be most valuable to their needs. The lower cost also reduces the warranty from two years to one. However, the Origin line retains the essentials, including the same engine, chassis, and design of the non-Origin models. As an added bonus, any factory accessory or upgrade purchased at the same time as an Origin model gets a 50% discount.
This entry-level lineup will include Origin versions of each of Janus’ four current models, 250 and 450 versions of both the Halcyon and Gryffin. The Halcyon models are the most recognizable, sporting classic 1930s flair and hand-applied pinstriping, as well as other vintage details. The Gryffin models are scrambler-styled motorcycles that were introduced in 2024 and include off-road-ready details like larger wheels and longer suspension travel.
The 250 versions of each are powered by an air-cooled 229cc Single making 14 hp at 7,000 rpm. The 450 versions get an air-/oil-cooled 445cc Single that makes 33 hp at 7,500 rpm. All four models are lightweight, weighing between 263 and 345 lb.
With limited color options and less graphics and other details, the Origin models are discounted by about $1,000 for the 250s and $1,500 for the 450s. Pricing for each Origin model is listed below:
