Kawasaki Introduces Versys 900 SE LT ABS For 2027

Kawasaki’s Versys sport-touring lineup now includes a mid-sized model. But who asked for all the tech?

There’s been a piece missing in Kawasaki’s sport-touring puzzle, a gap between the much-loved Versys 650 and its bigger sibling, the Versys 1100. With competing manufacturers offering a mid-sized motorcycle in the same category (such as the Yamaha Tracer 9, Triumph Tiger Sport 800, Ducati Multistrada V2), it comes as no surprise that Kawasaki wanted in on the action.

For 2027, Kawasaki will fill that gap with the all-new Versys 900 SE LT ABS. Powered by a liquid-cooled 948cc inline-Four motor derived from the Z900 line, the new Versys 900 produces a claimed 120 hp at 9,500 rpm and 71 Ib-ft of torque at 8,000 rpm. Kawasaki also says it’s the sportiest Versys model to date, with an all-new steel trellis frame, upright riding position, long-travel suspension, and 17-inch wheels to help make its case.

It’s also equipped with a wide range of tech, to include an Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS), Radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control Lite (ACC Lite), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Blind-Spot Detection (BSD), Kawasaki Cornering Management Function (KCMF), and Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC), all of which is controlled and displayed on a new 5-inch TFT color display that offers smartphone connectivity, naturally.

The Versys 900 claims to offer a nearly 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, which combined with a high-revving 4-cylinder motor, fully adjustable suspension, sporty Metzeler Roadtec 01 tires, a bidirectional quickshifter, and 310mm/260mm disc brakes, should make the new 900 capable of putting the sport in sport-touring.

Additionally, a rigid rear frame supports passenger and touring luggage, which coupled with a height-adjustable seat and seven-position windshield will help riders tailor the fit and wind protection on the new Versys. Hand guards, heated grips, LED fog lights, a centerstand, and hard saddlebags come standard on the 900 SE LT ABS model, all of which round out a nice mid-sized touring package.

On paper, the Versys 900 SE LT ABS looks like a tech-laden, trimmed down iteration of the Versys 1100 SE LT, a bike that I grew to love over the course of the year I housed one in my garage. But if Kawasaki is throwing all this technology at the mid-sized model and equipping it with an engine that’s nearly as powerful as the Versys 1100 (120 hp vs. 133 hp), along with a more approachable price tag ($13,599 vs. $19,799), what’s the motivation to buy the bigger model?

Is this the eventuality of all smaller displacement motorcycles moving forward? Let the high-dollar, tech-happy big brother test the theory, then introduce the same safety features and rider aids onto the smaller model, leaving little room for a motorcycle without any.

Don’t get me wrong, the new Versys 900 is a much needed addition to Kawasaki’s sport-touring lineup, offering riders a machine that’s quick, corners like a sportbike, and can carry them, their luggage, and a passenger well beyond the congested city streets. But who asked for all this technology? ABS, sure, but the rest of the acronyms feel like overflow from the flagship Versys 1100 SE LT model and undoubtedly raise the price of the mid-sized offering. Maybe they’ll offer a more bare-bones model of the new Versys 900, but for now we have a machine that leans more towards the higher-spec flagship model, leaving a gap between the Versys 650 and itself that could be filled with a bike built for those uninterested in the acronyms.

All of that being said, the $13,599 MSRP of the Versys 900 SE LT ABS buys you a lot of motorcycle. It also quenches the thirst of riders seeking a more powerful iteration of the Versys 650, without the price tag of the flagship 1100 variant. It is a tech-savvy, feature-rich machine with a well-known powerplant, premium components, and a new, edgy look that you’ll either like or love. And ultimately, we’re excited to ride one, acronyms or not.
