Every motorcyclist in the last, oh, say 40 years, has dreamed of being Evel Knievel. Flying recklessly through the air with nary a twinge of fear or doubt about what might possibly end up being a somewhat…er, rough landing. Today’s X Games and Red Bull extreme athletes can do things on modern motocross bikes that seem to defy physics, but in 1972, Evel was risking his life on what was essentially a stock Harley-Davidson XR-750.
If you’ve got $40,000 (or more) burning a hole in your pocket and a latent desire to channel your inner gladiatorial stunt man, there are two interesting items up for sale right now on the Heritage Auctions website: Evel Knievel’s diamond-studded walking stick (with hidden liquor flask, naturally) and a real set of his famous red, white and blue leathers, circa 1972-1973.
The bids on these items currently sit at $40,000 and $55,000, respectively…plus the auction fee, of course. You can check them out on Heritage Auctions’ site here, if you’re so inclined. You’d better hurry, though; the auction ends Sunday, February 26.
While we can’t help you with the suitably hairy chest to go with the half-unzipped leather suit, at least you can carry the swagger that goes along with being able to pour yourself a dram of whiskey out of Evel Knievel’s walking stick.
