Ardys Campbell Kellerman, an 81-year-old Texas woman who was a legend in the world of BMW motorcycles, died after a motorcycle crash Monday, June 24, 2013, in Alabama.
Kellerman, a member of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, became one of the first female riders in North America to cover one million miles on BMW motorcycles—a milestone she reached in August 2011.
The crash happened at 3:22 p.m. at U.S. 78 and Rex Lake Road in Leeds, Alabama. Authorities said Kellerman was driving her motorcycle and pulled out of a convenience store at the intersection, which is near Barber Motor Sports. As she pulled onto U.S. 78, she was struck by an oncoming passenger car driven by an 82-year-old male.
Kellerman was airlifted to UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m.
According to published reports, Kellerman rode her BMW on countless cross country trips, competed in numerous competitions, and was beloved in motorcycle circles. Her grandson Paul Clement told one publication, “She died doing what she loved.”
Funeral services are schedule for July 24, in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
