Observant travelers in the southwestern U.S. might happen across small roadside shrines called capillitas, a Spanish word meaning “small chapels.” These are not to be confused with the sometimes elaborate roadside crosses that mark the sites of fatal accidents; these chapels are typically built for personal reasons, but they are open to anyone in need of spiritual comfort. If you come across one, treat it with respect and, if you feel inclined, take the opportunity for quiet prayer, meditation or reflection before continuing on your journey.
