KTM’s all-new 2019 790 Adventure and 790 Adventure R are middleweight ADV bikes that are powered by a 95-hp, 799cc parallel twin, weigh just 417 lbs dry and are highly capable off-road. The 790 Adventure is aimed at general adventure-touring enthusiasts while the up-spec 790 Adventure R is aimed at more demanding off-road riders. Rider magazine tested them both in Morocco. 1. The kind of off roading I do, the std. 790 would be more than up to the task but for a grand more the R’s suspension is well worth it to me. Waiting for the Yamaha 700 Tenere to see how that compares.

    • I went the Adventure S 18 months ago, realising the type of life the bike will generally lead and knowing I can get more capability out of different tyres for planned more off road excursions.
I’ll never be a hard core offroader – don’t care to be – but at the same time not fearful of long distances on moderate dirt and gravel, often alone. Tyre plugs and pump are must-haves in that scenario so tubeless tyres where a big part of my consideration before I bought.
That alone ruled out the standard Africa Twin and Tenere. Lack of cruise control on longer rides also ruled out the Tenere, as good as it is.
I guess it’s good to stand back and take an objective look at how we ride, where we ride and not how we dream we ride
