The 1873 Cottonwood Charcoal Kilns were built to supply charcoal to local smelters. Kilns used to be on the Owens Lake shoreline, providing easy boat transport, but are high and dry since Los Angeles took the Owens Valley water long ago.
Steaming water pools at the Hot Creek Geological Site, near Mammoth Airport, display the volcanic nature of this area.
