After several generations of prototypes and iterations, Goshen, Indiana-based Janus Motorcycles has started full production and shipment of their Phoenix and Halcyon 250 motorcycles. Building upon their success in high-end custom mopeds and several years of building their road-ready 49cc Halcyon model, owners Devin Biek and Richard Worsham saw a unique need in the American marketplace for motorbikes that would inspire a new generation and type of rider.
Drawing on the rich pool of manufacturing and fabrication shops in Northern Indiana, Janus is able to produce highly-customizable motorcycles while maintaining a close watch on quality and finish. The motorcycles feature hand-formed tanks, locally welded components such as frames, hand-bent stainless handlebars, hand-painted trim, and a proprietary anti-dive suspension developed by the Janus team.
“We are not industry insiders; we are a small company handcrafting small bikes,” Worsham said. “With my background in architecture and Devin’s in custom building and manufacturing, we produce a product that channels function and beauty in equal parts. Our goal is to produce bikes that connect the rider with the machine and the road, with speed and agility that will make riding simply fun.”
Biek and Worsham are influenced by the clarity of design & purpose in classic motorcycles, such as the Grand Prix bikes of the ’60s and early Harley-Davidsons. Their Halcyon and Phoenix models pair the timeless aesthetic of vintage machines with modern electronics and safety features. Each model weighs in at well under 300 pounds and provides a truly unique riding experience when paired with the spirited and reliable air-cooled 229cc motor. Pricing begins at $7,800, with production starting on the second batch of 25 units beginning in this summer.
The small Janus team is planning a series of demo days throughout the summer where interested riders can experience each model first-hand. Current stops include Chicago, New York, Richmond, Raleigh and Indianapolis, with more locations to be announced. Visit janusmotorcycles.com for the complete schedule.
