Moto Guzzi is rolling out several new models for 2016 and 2017. Joining the Stone, Special and Racer models in the V7 II line is the new 2016 V7 II Stornello, a scrambler inspired by the 1967 Stornello Scrambler America. Only 1,000 units of this limited-edition model will be produced, each individually numbered. Powered by an air-cooled, 744cc longitudinal V-twin with a 6-speed transmission, it has standard ABS and traction control. Knockabout features include an Arrow high-mount 2-into-1 exhaust, a long upholstered saddle, spoked wheels with semi-knobby tires, rubber knee pads on the tank, fork gaiters, cleated footpegs with removable aluminum inserts and brushed aluminum number plates that match the front fender.

Bumping displacement of the V7 to 853cc has created the new V9 family, which debuts with two models for 2017. Influenced by the Nevada 750, the V9 Roamer is a middleweight cruiser with 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels painted matte black with a diamond-cut finish, a raised chrome handlebar and mid-mount footpegs.

The V9 Bobber has a dark, rough-and-tumble look with matte paint, blacked-out components and black 16-inch wheels shod with chunky tires, and a drag-style handlebar gives it a sporty riding position. With the 853cc V-twin making a claimed 55 horsepower and 45 lb-ft of torque and both models weighing about 440 pounds, these new V9 bikes should be as frisky as they are stylish.

Moto Guzzi’s 1400 line of big cruisers will grow to five models for 2017 with the MGX-21 Flying Fortress, a menacing, American-style bagger powered by an air/oil-cooled 1,380cc longitudinal V-twin that makes 96 horsepower and 86 lb-ft of torque at the crank (claimed). It rolls on a 21-inch cast front wheel with a unique carbon fiber cover. Completing the dark look, the front fender, tank panels and saddlebag and belly pan covers are also made of carbon fiber, and everything but the bright-red cylinder heads and front brake calipers is finished in black. Behind the sleek front fairing is a Bluetooth-enabled audio system. Unique in the cruiser segment, like the other 1400s, the MGX-21 has multiple engine modes and traction control, as well as ABS and electronic cruise control.

    • Yes, all Moto Guzzis have longitudinal V-twins since their crankshafts run longways, in line with the wheels. Their cylinders stick out side-to-side (transverse to the crankshaft). Most other motorcycles have transverse crankshafts, which are perpendicular to the wheels.

      • Wow, have I ever been wrong. I always thought it was the cylinder layout that made it transverse or inline. THANKS for setting me straight.

  1. SHODDY Workmanship – NO Quality Control – NO Customer Care

My new V7 Special came with a compromised clutch, machining waste (swarf) in the engine, and no O-ring seal in the final drive unit. I wrote, emailed and called customer care but never got a reply. So, I would recommend looking elsewhere for a new motorcycle.

    • I agree – seen/experienced these same three issues in my 2014 California Touring. Even had a broken off hex tool in one of the exhaust shield bolts. Rode my 2002 California for 87K miles – minor issues. Don’t like my 2014 as much – violated my first priority desire with a bike: it should never leave me broke along the road.
