BMW Motorrad entered the twist-and-go mobility market for 2013 with a pair of 647cc maxi-scooters, the C 650 GT and the C 600 Sport (despite the numerical difference in the model designations, they were powered by the same engine). Fast, stylish and feature-laden, they were aimed at urban dwellers who wanted the fun, convenience, compactness and fuel efficiency of a two-wheeler.

Both models were updated for 2016, and they both now use 650 in their appellations. As their names imply, the C 650 GT is geared toward longer rides and has more touring features while the C 650 Sport is lighter and has a more dynamic riding position. The liquid-cooled, 647cc parallel twin that powers them both is rated at 60 crankshaft horsepower at 7,500 rpm. Engine mapping was reworked to meet the latest emissions regulations, and a new exhaust improves the look and sound. Thanks to new clutch linings, revised ratios and different centrifugal force weights, the CVT transmission has better clutch engagement and snappier off-the-line response.

As before, the C 650 GT and C 650 Sport use a hybrid composite chassis consisting of a tubular-steel bridge frame and a die-cast aluminum section near the swingarm bearing. Rear suspension travel remains 4.5 inches, but damping settings were revised for a better balance between comfort and sport. Triple-disc brakes are backed up by standard ABS and the addition of standard ASC (traction control).

The C 650 Sport wears all-new, more angular bodywork while the C 650 GT gets a minor styling update, with new rear side trim panels and a new rear taillight. Both models also get new instrument panels, new handlebar trim and an easier-to-use centerstand. The C 650 Sport will be available in Valencia Orange metallic matte, Lightwhite non-metallic and Blackstorm metallic. The C 650 GT will be available in Blackstorm metallic, Frozen Bronze metallic and Lightwhite non-metallic. Both scooters should be in BMW dealerships in the first quarter of 2016; pricing is TBD.

  1. Love the thought of these scooters. Like the Burghman 650, all are very functional and would be fun to ride. Only problem for me is the cost–a little high for a retiree.
