Adriatic Moto Tours: Part 4

Our Adriatic Moto Tours Eastern Europe adventure has now lasted two weeks, and I’m sad that it will end with our ride today.

When I last checked in, I reported that our group of 14 riders (with two riding guides and the van driver) was on its way to Prague, and it truly was a magical city. Shortly after we arrived, our tour guides Dusan and Matej arranged for a three-hour walking tour of the city—which reminds me, this is not a tour for the faint of heart or faint of leg. In an effort to show its customers a lot in a short time, riding days are usually 150-200 miles, though there is also usually a short route if the weather is bad. And often a walking tour follows, conducted by a local guide.

Our female guide was wonderful and kept up a steady chatter as she led us around Prague to Wenceslas Square, the castle, St. Vitus Cathedral (7th largest in the world), the Charles Bridge and much more. While the tour was wonderful, unfortunately it was conducted mostly in the rain.

We spent a second day and night in Prague and were able to wander around at our leisure, but it seemed that always there was something to do. I teamed up with four other tour members and we dined that second night in (of all places) an Indian restaurant. One of our group commented, “That was the hottest mild curry I’ve ever had,” and beads of sweat formed on my bald pate.

Okay, how many of you have ever heard of Cesky Krumlov? Raise your hands. What? No? After our second day in Prague, we rode about 170 miles to this wonderful village in the Czech Republic that is in the Renaissance and Baroque styles, and it was truly a treat. A castle dominates the town and, of course, we had to walk up to and explore it. They keep bears in a pen at the castle and it was really a treat to see them lumbering around down below.

The weather greatly improved for our ride to Salzburg, Austria, on Thursday, as the scenery changed to alpen with rolling hills backed by dark mountains abruptly rising in the distance, snow still visible in late June. We rode above a scene of a placid lake ringed by hills and a town, finally all of it in sunshine. Would you believe that our hotel has a Sound of Music channel? The movie plays on it 24 hours a day.

Unfortunately today, Friday, is the last day of our ride as we head back to Ljubljana, Slovenia. Thanks for riding along.

This is the fourth and final post in the series.
