Scorpion Yukon Jacket and Pants | Gear Review

Scorpion Yukon Jacket and Pants.
Scorpion Yukon Jacket and Pants.

The Yukon line from Scorpion is a jacket and pants set crafted from its Exo-Dry waterproof and breathable three-layer laminate fabric. With no rain liner required, the garments can be cooler in a summer downpour, and allow riders to choose their own warmth layer for cooler times. Heavy 1680-denier nylon defends impact areas, and Scorpion’s Exo-Stitch safety seams reinforce the construction; critical junctures are bar tacked. Inside is a slinky polyester lining, with stronger taffeta fabric used in high-wear locations. Sewing quality is excellent throughout and the waterproofing held up to a SoCal hose test in lieu of real rain.

Weatherproof zippers abound for pockets and vents, though not all pockets are waterproof. Of the 10 jacket pockets available, I found the handwarmers, vest and key pockets the most useful. The Yukon pants hold another bushel of stuff in their cargo and zippered slash pockets, and the waistband hides a secret money pocket. Vents are also abundant, placed at forearms, shoulders, sides and back on the jacket, with a set of thigh and hip vents on each pants leg. With vent zippers open you’re about as cool as possible in a fully armored suit. Or button up, install the zip-on high collar (not shown) and let the weather take its best shot.

SAS-TEC CE-certified armor protects arms and shoulders, chest and back. Initially stiff, the elbow pads have broken in. The thick chest pad isn’t elegant, attaching across the chest with hook-and-loop, but if it keeps my ribs intact, I’m for it. Hips and knees also have SAS-TEC protection.

The Yukon jacket has the usual arm, waist and cuff options for tweaking the fit, while the pants have waistband adjusters. Elastic panels at the rear of the pants and above the knee prevent binding for a comfortable ride. Adjustable knee and elbow/forearm armor also allow customizing the fit, as does a kidney belt inside the jacket. The Yukon pants open wide via hook-and-loop for donning boots, and feature calf leather panels on the lower legs to insulate and protect that area. I found the pants ideal for riding while standing or sitting, and for off-bike meandering.

As separates or a suit (they zip together at the rear), Scorpion’s Yukon gear answers the call of the adventurer for weatherproof, liner-free riding gear. Thanks to a full suite of armor it will take on the elements and the lumps and bumps that adventures dish out. But it’s also very easy to wear, and has become like a second skin. I did find the sleeves narrow even for my skinny arms and wish the leg openings were more generous, but those nits won’t stop me from grabbing the Yukon garments for my next adventure. They are available in gray or black in sizes S-3XL, plus tall sizes. Prices are $549.95 to $564.95 for the jacket, and $359.95 to $374.95 for the pants, with a three-year limited warranty.
