California-based Zero Motorcycles, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year, enjoyed record sales of its electric motorcycles in 2015. At the American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) in Orlando, Florida, Zero announced its 2016 lineup, which includes two new models—the DSR and FXS—as well as new Z-Force interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors, higher energy density from its Z-Force power packs and a new Level 2 Charge Tank accessory.

The DSR is a performance version of Zero’s DS (Dual-Sport) model, with 25-percent more horsepower (67, up from 54) and 56-percent more torque (106 lb-ft, up from 68) thanks to the higher-output 660-amp motor controller that debuted on the SR and the new Z-Force 75-7R interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor. The 2016 Zero DSR with ZF13.0 power pack is priced at $15,995.

The FXS is a supermoto variant of Zero’s light and playful FX (Freestyle) model. It churns out 70 lb-ft of torque and 44 horsepower in a sub-300-pound package, with nimble handling and sticky Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires. It uses the new Z-Force 75-5 interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor and is available with ZF3.3 ($8,495) and ZF6.5 ($10,990) power packs.

Z-Force Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) Motor
Most 2016 Zero models get new Z-Force interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors, which Zero says produce power more efficiently, cool more rapidly and have a higher thermal capability, all of which significantly improves performance during hard riding and allows higher sustained top speeds. The new Z-Force IPM motors appear on the following 2016 models: DSR, SR, FXS, S ZF13.0 and DS ZF13.0.

Level 2 Charge Tank Accessory
Zero’s new Charge Tank accessory is designed for public Level 2 charging using the popular J1772 standard. It complements the standard on-board charger for a total of 3.8 kW of charging capacity and effectively triples on-board charging speed. ZF9.8 power packs can be charged to 95 percent in about two hours and the new higher capacity ZF13.0 takes about three hours, which is as much as 53 miles of range per hour of charging. The Charge Tank is compatible with model year 2015 and later SR, S, DSR and DS models. The dealer-installed option is priced at $1,988, not including installation charge. NOTE: Because they occupy the same space under the “tank,” the Charge Tank and Power Tank (auxiliary power pack) accessories may not be installed on the same motorcycle.

Extended Range
Zero claims its latest lithium-ion power packs have the highest energy density in the electric vehicle industry. New, more efficient cell chemistry on all new 2016 models translates to more range—up to 197 miles in the city and 98 miles on the highway for the S and SR models using the Power Tank accessory. New Z-Force power packs offer 4-percent more capacity on the S, SR, DS and DSR models and 14-percent more capacity on the FX and FXS.
