Cannon Ball Project Departs Saturday, May 3

Saturday, May 3, is a special day. One hundred years ago to the day, Erwin George Baker set off from San Diego, California, on a 7-horsepower Indian determined to break the cross-country record of 20 days to New York City. He arrived in Battery Park just 11-1/2 days later, shattering the record and earning the nickname “Cannon Ball.”

On Saturday, thanks to the efforts of Don Emde and Joe Columbero, 26 riders will retrace Baker’s route as closely as possible on the Cannon Ball Project, a cross-country ride based on Baker’s actual accounts. The Project plans to tell the story of the ride on a day-to-day basis—you can follow its progress at CannonBallProject.com and on Facebook at CannonBall100th.
